      About Marlo Merhige

      Marlo Merhige has transformed the Monroe County Controller’s office through hard work, independence, and dedication.  With almost 30 years of public auditing experience, Marlo is highly qualified to handle complex accounting, auditing, payroll, and pension issues.  

      The job of Controller requires an experienced accountant with knowledge of managing Monroe County’s accounting system.  Marlo Merhige is the only candidate for Controller who is an accountant and has the financial experience to successfully manage the county’s finances and keep taxes low.  

      As Monroe County Controller, Marlo Merhige has a record of fighting for taxpayers.  Under her leadership, she has increased transparency and accountability by placing all expenses online.  Marlo has modernized the office by making county payroll, vendor payments and revenue backup electronic, which reduced costs and saved tax dollars.  

      Marlo has been recognized professionally by her peers as she was selected to serve as President of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Controllers from 2021 to 2022.  She was also selected by Pennsylvania Auditor General Tim DeFoor to serve on his transition team.

      The Controller is the elected Chief Financial Officer for Monroe County and is responsible for the financial affairs of the county to ensure that county finances are administered, recorded, and reported legally, transparently and in a timely fashion.

      The Controller’s Office budget is $180 million. The Controller oversees over 40 departments in Monroe County and monitors all revenue collections. The Controller's Office processes payroll for over 700 employees, reviews and processes all County bills, oversees grant programs from state and federal agencies. The Controller conducts various audits, including Monroe County's nine Magisterial District Court Justices, twenty Tax Collectors, the Monroe County District Attorney’s Drug Forfeiture audit and a yearly financial audit that is due to the State. In addition, the Controller also audits three jail accounts, the county row offices and various hotels and short-term rentals for taxes owed to the County. The Controller also serves on the Employees Retirement Board, the County's Salary Board, and the Prison Board of Inspectors.

      The Controller is the Secretary for the Retirement Fund and processes all pension payments as employees leave the County. The retirement board manages a $125 million fund and makes changes to the Fund’s investment allocations as deemed necessary.
